31st October 2024

Together for Girls, working with partners like the World Health Organization, Georgia State University, China Agricultural University, University of Edinburgh, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and many others, conducted additional, first-of-its-kind research on childhood sexual violence.

This research included 975 studies in 141 countries and also fed into the UNICEF estimation work*. Overall, a record number of children are experiencing sexual violence around the world. This is unacceptable.

UNICEF estimation work

In 2024, UNICEF released, for the first time, estimates on the scale of sexual violence in childhood at global and regional levels. The estimates are derived from broadly comparable national data on contact forms of sexual violence among girls, covering more than 80% of the female population worldwide.
